THE FOAM ON

THE RIVER

1975

From front flap:

To Harry Pritchard, city-bred accountant, the remote rubber plantation of Sungei Mas with its rushing river, its beauty, its tranquillity, seemed very close to Paradise. The brightest flower that bloomed there was Fatimah, mistress of the plantation's owner, Oswald Ramsay; a girl whose delicate loveliness and warmth soon vanquished the inhibitions of the gauche newcomer. And then Fatimah was found shot, with Ramsay in a drunken stupor on the floor and the gun by his side. Had he indeed killed her as he himself half believed? Or could it be Pritchard? Nathan, the chief clerk? Her brother, Wahid? Ismail, the cook-boy? All had their secrets and Sheila Ross uses her narrative powers to weave them subtly into a thrilling denouement. Evoking the background of the Malaysia which she knows so well, she has created a picture of a society which to most of us will be alien and yet has now come amazingly alive. An engrossing story in a setting worthy of it.
